Clerks II

Clerks IIIf you need to escape the oppressive summer heat, this is the movie to go see. Its mindless, juvenile, and crass rants will leave you laughing and a bit disgusted. The return of Jay and Silent Bob offer moments of comic bliss and disturbing imagery. The plot is a bit thin, but it is the sequel to an almost plotless movie, so not much more could be expected.

Syriana (a 3-sentence review)

SyrianaBecause I’m so horribly behind in my reviews, and I’m always too crazy busy to sit down and write out a thoughtful, thorough review, I introduce to you: laura’s three-sentence reviews. (The preceding sentence does not count; neither does this one.)

Syriana, a international politics thriller starring George Clooney, Matt Damon and others, gives us whirlwind snapshots of lives intertwined around the world’s obsession with Middle East oil. The cast is excellent, and obviously I agree with the message and think it’s an important movie for the American public to see; unfortunately, the Steven Soderbergh film is so convoluted that I couldn’t understand what all was going on until I googled it after viewing it and read the synapsis (which, by the way, is like 12 paragraphs long–that should tip you off to the complexity of the plot…). This method of interweaving lots of seemingly disparate storylines into one worked wonderfully in Traffic, which had a much simpler (although equally important) message, but alas, if Syriana was confusing to me, it probably totally lost most of the folks who really SHOULD see this movie!
laura’s grade: B+
